Slow, frozen or full of pop-ups. Here is what usually causes it.
Nobody expects you to diagnose your own computer before you call. Working that out is the first half of any computer repair, and it helps to know that most of the calls we get come down to a handful of causes. Most of them can be fixed without buying anything new.
Pop-ups and fake warnings
Flashing warnings that say your computer is infected, a browser that keeps opening pages you did not ask for, a search page that changed by itself. Most of it gets in through a bogus download link, an attachment that looked harmless, or a pop-up dressed up to look official. The scariest ones tell you to call a phone number right away. Do not call it. Real security software does not ask you to phone a number from a browser pop-up.
A slow start and a slower day
A computer that takes five minutes to start and then crawls is usually carrying years of startup clutter, a drive that is nearly full, and settings nobody has touched since the day it came out of the box. Older machines with a spinning hard drive slow down the most. Moving to a faster drive is one of the biggest speed jumps you can give an older computer.
Strange noises and heat
A fan that roars, a laptop too hot to rest on your lap, or a clicking sound that was not there last month. Fans clog with dust and wear out. A clicking drive can be a sign the drive is failing, and that is the moment to get your files copied somewhere safe, before anything else.
It will not turn on
Sometimes it is the charger or the battery. Sometimes it is something inside. We find out which before anyone replaces a part, so you only pay for the fix that is actually needed.
Computer repair or a new computer? An honest answer
Often the smart fix is not a new computer. A faster drive, more memory, a new battery or a fan can make an older machine feel new again for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. We tell you what will make a real difference before anything is bought.
Upgrades that are usually worth it
For a computer that is a few years old, a faster drive is often the single biggest improvement. More memory helps a machine that slows to a crawl with a few browser tabs open. On a laptop, a new battery can turn a computer that lives on its charger back into one you can carry around. A worn fan makes a hot, loud machine quiet again. None of these are glamorous. All of them cost less than a new computer.
Other times a replacement really is the sensible call. A machine that can no longer get security updates, or one where the repair would cost close to a replacement, is not worth pouring money into. In that case we say so plainly, and then help carry every file across to the new computer.
Your files come first
Before anything is opened up or reinstalled, we look at what is stored on the machine and copy the important things somewhere safe if there is any risk to them. Family photos, tax records, the folder of recipes nobody else has a copy of. Hardware can be replaced. Those cannot.
The first thing worth asking is whether your files live anywhere apart from that single machine. If the honest answer is no, we can set up backups so your photos and files are copied and recoverable, and a dead drive becomes an inconvenience rather than a disaster.
Virus removal, done properly
Computer virus removal is not finished when the obvious pop-up disappears. Doing it properly means cleaning out the infection completely, resetting hijacked browsers, removing add-ons that should not be there, and installing the updates that close the door it came in through. Then we lock it down so it does not happen again.
If a scammer has already been on the phone with you, or you let someone connect to your computer remotely, tell us in the note so we know to look for anything they left behind, and change the passwords that matter from a different device. Two other questions are worth a moment here. Does your email ask for a second code when you sign in? Is your banking password different from your streaming password? If either answer is no, ask us about it while we are there.
Before we leave, we show you what to watch for: the fake download buttons, the official looking pop-ups and the email attachments that started it. Five minutes of that saves a lot of repeat visits.
Computer repair in Nashville, at your home
Windows or Mac, desktop or laptop, the visit happens at your home, any day of the week, across the Nashville area. In home computer repair means no loading a tower into the car and no week-long wait at a counter.
Laptop repair
Laptops have a harder life than desktops. They get dropped, carried in bags and charged in bed. Hinges, batteries, keyboards and chargers all wear out, and a laptop that seems dead is sometimes just a tired charger. That is the first thing we check, before anyone talks about replacing anything.
Each job is fixed properly rather than patched over. The price is quoted flat and agreed with you up front, and if that same fault returns, the return visit costs you nothing.
When the computer is not the problem
Sometimes a slow computer is really slow WiFi. If pages crawl on every device in the house, not only one, our WiFi and networking service is the better place to start. Moving to a new phone at the same time as a new computer? We handle phone setup and transfers too. And for a gamer whose PC is ready for more, our gaming PC build days cover new builds from the parts up.
